Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell 86% in four days in August 2026, and nobody has confirmed why. Earned media still accounts for 84% of AI citations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, a figure that has held between 82% and 89% since July 2025. Platform tactics decay. Third-party authority compounds.
I wrote two weeks ago about Reddit’s growing importance in AI recommendations, and why brands in our categories needed to pay attention to the conversations happening there.
This week, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations has reportedly fallen 86%. The algorithm changed almost overnight. But another signal has stayed remarkably steady, which is that earned media accounts for 84% of AI citations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
If you are building your AI discoverability strategy around whatever source AI favors today, you are already behind. The goal is not to game AI. It is to build the authority AI keeps looking for.
We have watched this work in both directions. One placement for a beauty client drove a 96% increase in AI-assisted traffic and a 61% increase in organic search in the same period, and across our client base affiliate integration has produced an average 62% lift in affiliate-attributed revenue. None of that came from optimizing for a platform. It came from earning coverage credible sources were willing to point to.
What actually happened
According to Promptwatch, Reddit held an average 3.83% share of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7. On August 14 that share fell below 1%, averaging 0.52% through August 17, a relative drop of 86.4% in roughly four days.
Two details matter more than the headline number.
The first is that nobody has confirmed why it happened. Promptwatch flagged a change in ChatGPT’s search behavior on August 8, when the platform started leaning heavily on domain-specific queries, but Search Engine Journal noted that the timing gap between August 8 and the August 14 cliff leaves the explanation incomplete. OpenAI has said nothing publicly.
The second is that this was specific to ChatGPT. Reddit’s citation share in Google AI Overviews slid about 11% over the same period, gradually, with no single break point.
So the responsible read is this. Something moved, the cause is unknown, and the platform responsible has not explained itself. Which is precisely the point I want to make.

You cannot build a brand on rented land
Every new channel produces a shortcut. SEO had keyword stuffing, influencer marketing had purchased followers, and generative engine optimization now has Reddit seeding, where brands manufacture posts and comment threads designed to influence what AI eventually recommends.
A brand could have spent six months and real money building that program. Then one unannounced retrieval change lands in the middle of August and the value of the work is suddenly an open question.
Reddit is not irrelevant, and I want to be clear about that. It remains one of the richest sources of honest consumer conversation, product discovery and category language available to us, and Reddit’s own communications chief made a fair point in Axios when he said the platform’s value to communicators is the conversation happening today, not where it surfaces tomorrow.
The lesson is about concentration risk. When your visibility lives in one place you do not control, you are one product decision away from starting over.
The signal that has not moved
While individual domains rise and fall, third-party authority keeps holding.
Muck Rack’s May 2026 study, What Is AI Reading?, analyzed more than 25 million links from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini responses across 17 industries. Earned media accounted for 84% of all citations. Journalism alone made up 27%. Paid and advertorial content accounted for 0.3%.
A lot of brands are still spending against that number.
The part I keep coming back to is not the 84%. It is that the number barely moves.
Muck Rack has now run this study three times, going back to July 2025, and earned media has landed between 82% and 89% in every edition. Consider what happened in that window. New model versions shipped across all three platforms. Retrieval methods changed, including whatever ChatGPT did in August. Reddit rose in importance and then fell off a cliff in one platform. Cloudflare flipped AI crawling to opt-in by default, and more than a million sites chose to block. Major publishers formed a licensing coalition to force paid access instead of open scraping.
Through all of it, the share of citations coming from earned media moved by a handful of points.
That is the closest thing to a stable law anyone has found in AI search so far, and it is worth more than any tactic. A tactic tells you what worked last month. A pattern that survives three research cycles and a platform earthquake tells you where to put your budget for the next two years.
That is why we treat earned media as infrastructure rather than a campaign line item.

Different engines read the internet differently
There is another reason to stop optimizing for a single source.
Muck Rack found meaningful differences between platforms. ChatGPT cited sources in 96% of responses, Gemini in 82%, and Claude in just 55%. Their preferred domains diverged too, with ChatGPT leaning toward large mainstream publications while other models pulled from academic and community sources.
The type of question changes the answer set as well. Industry trend queries drove journalism citations at more than double the rate of how-to questions, and press releases showed up 3.5 times more often in trend-based responses than in best-of lists.
So the question I would ask is not how to get ChatGPT to recommend you. It is whether enough credible evidence exists about your brand that any of these systems can recommend you with confidence.
The part nobody tells you about starting late
Authority does not backfill, and that is the piece I want founders to sit with.
If a competitor in your category has been earning credible coverage for eighteen months, that coverage is already inside the source pool AI systems draw from. You cannot buy it retroactively. You cannot outspend it in a quarter. The only move available is to start accumulating your own, which means the distance between you and them grows every month you wait.
I watch this play out in the audits we run. We pull twenty real buying questions for a category and the same three brands come back in the answers over and over. They are not always the biggest brands or the best funded. They are the ones with the longest run of third-party coverage behind them.
Meanwhile the questions are getting more commercial. Customers are not asking AI what a retinol serum is. They are asking which one to buy, for their skin, at their budget. That answer is being formed right now, with or without your brand in it.

What your website has to do now
If AI systems are increasingly running domain-specific searches to answer particular questions, your site has to hold up when one of those searches lands on it.
That means your website needs to say plainly who you are, what category you belong in, what your products do, who they are for, why they are different, what customers commonly ask, and what expertise your founders carry. Most brand sites in beauty, fashion, wellness and lifestyle are written to look beautiful and say almost nothing a machine can extract.
Your website is what you say about yourself. Earned media is what credible outsiders say about you. Both need to be true and both need to be findable, and the strongest AI search visibility comes from the two reinforcing each other.
How we approach this at Push The Envelope
We have spent over twenty years as a boutique PR agency earning visibility for beauty, fashion, wellness, lifestyle and grooming brands. What changed is where that visibility travels. A placement used to reach a publication’s readers. Today the same placement can move organic search, affiliate revenue, brand authority and the information AI platforms draw from when someone asks for a recommendation.
Our Performance PR methodology runs in four connected stages, which we call PTE Visibility Intelligence.
FOUND starts with what is already true. We run real category buying questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI experiences to see which brands come back, which sources are feeding those answers, and where you are simply absent. Then we start building the authority around the brand through editorial coverage, category positioning, digital PR and founder expertise.
RECOMMENDED is where we pursue the publications, commerce writers and category authorities capable of changing your standing in the market, because AI is reading what other people say about you far more than what you say about yourself. In beauty, fashion and wellness that means the commerce desks AI pulls from when someone asks what to buy, the testing publications editors themselves cite, and the category authorities that shape what gets recommended downstream.
TRUSTED layers in validation, meaning editorial coverage, awards, reviews, creator partnerships and media relationships that compound over time. Freshness matters here. Muck Rack found more than half of journalism citations came from content published within the previous year, which is a good argument against treating authority as a one-time project.
PURCHASED is where visibility gets a commercial destination. This is why affiliate commerce sits inside our PR strategy rather than beside it. Commerce publishers, shopping guides and affiliate-enabled editorial move a reader from discovery to recommendation to trust to purchase, and they give us a revenue number instead of an impression count.
What this looks like in practice
After we secured a Wirecutter placement for one of our beauty clients, the brand sold more than 600 units in 24 hours, another generated $155,000 in one month.
The commerce results were what everyone noticed. The Google Analytics data over the following period was the part I found more interesting, because that 96% increase in AI-assisted traffic and 61% increase in organic search came off the same single placement.
One authoritative placement, three different channels moving at once. That is what we mean by visibility that compounds.

What I would do with this
Do not rebuild your strategy around the Reddit news. Build authority that survives the next change, whatever it turns out to be.
In practice that means writing a website that clearly communicates your category relevance and founder expertise, earning credible media coverage on a consistent cadence, getting into the product recommendation formats commerce editors actually update, winning awards that carry weight in your category, keeping fresh third-party coverage in circulation, opening purchase pathways through affiliate commerce, and measuring whether your brand shows up when a real customer asks AI the question that leads to a sale.
That is not a ChatGPT strategy or an SEO strategy. It is a visibility strategy, and it is the only version of this work that does not need to be rebuilt every time a platform changes its mind.
Frequently asked questions
Did Reddit stop being useful for AI discoverability?
No. Reddit’s citation share dropped sharply in ChatGPT Search in mid-August 2026, but the decline in Google’s AI surfaces was gradual and the cause has not been confirmed. Reddit remains a strong source of consumer conversation and category insight. The risk is depending on it as your primary AI visibility channel.
What is generative engine optimization?
GEO is the practice of building visibility inside AI-generated answers rather than traditional search results. Because AI systems cite earned media in the large majority of responses, GEO overlaps heavily with digital PR, editorial coverage and third-party authority building.
Does earned media affect AI search visibility?
Yes. Muck Rack’s May 2026 analysis of more than 25 million links found earned media accounted for 84% of AI citations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, with paid and advertorial content at 0.3%. That pattern has held since July 2025.
How long does AI discoverability take to build?
Most brands see search and AI visibility effects build over three to six months as coverage accumulates, gets indexed and starts appearing in the source pool AI systems draw from. Affiliate and commerce placements often produce faster revenue signals.
Can a brand catch up if it starts late on AI discoverability?
Yes, but not instantly. AI systems draw from coverage that already exists, so a brand starting today is building a source pool that competitors may have been accumulating for years. Most brands in beauty, fashion and wellness see meaningful movement in three to six months of consistent earned coverage. The cost of waiting is that the gap widens while you decide.
Why isn’t my beauty brand showing up when I ask ChatGPT for product recommendations?
Usually because there is not enough credible third-party coverage for the model to draw on. AI systems build recommendations from what independent sources say about a brand, and earned media accounts for 84% of the links they cite. A brand with a beautiful website and thin editorial coverage tends to be absent from the answer even when the product is excellent.
Does affiliate coverage help AI discoverability or only sales?
Both. Affiliate-enabled editorial lives in the shopping guides and product roundups AI systems draw on when someone asks what to buy, so a single placement can produce trackable revenue and a citable authority signal at the same time. That is why affiliate commerce belongs inside a PR strategy rather than beside it.
How do wellness and supplement brands build AI discoverability with claim restrictions?
Through third-party validation rather than brand claims. Regulated categories cannot say what a product does in marketing language, but editorial coverage, testing publications, expert commentary and founder credentials can establish category relevance without the brand making a claim it is not permitted to make. That makes earned media more important in wellness, not less.
Is a strong Amazon presence enough for AI discoverability?
No. Amazon rankings and reviews help conversion once a customer is already looking for you, but AI systems assembling a recommendation pull mostly from editorial and journalistic sources. A brand that sells well on Amazon with little earned coverage can still be missing from the answer that sends the customer to Amazon in the first place.
What kind of brands does Push The Envelope work with?
We are a boutique PR agency working with beauty, fashion, wellness, lifestyle, grooming, home, travel and consumer brands, combining earned media, affiliate commerce and AI visibility strategy into one program.
The source AI trusts most today may not be the source it trusts next quarter, and I would not spend much energy trying to predict which way it goes. What I would spend energy on is giving these systems more reasons to find you, understand you and recommend you, because that work holds its value no matter what the next update does.
If you want to know where your brand actually stands, we run an AI Visibility Audit that shows you the real buying questions in your category, which brands are coming back in the answers, which sources are feeding them, and where you are missing. It is well within our wheelhouse and worth getting started on sooner rather than later.
